Your child’s first visit is an important time. This first visit helps establish a dental home for your child here at Rockland Pediatric Dental and Orthodontics and begins laying the foundation for their relationship with dentists for the rest of their lives. Our pediatric dentists and team love children and go above and beyond to help them feel comfortable and have positive experiences so that they can feel completely confident when visiting the dentist now and in the future.
When Should Children Have Their First Visit?
We, along with the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, recommend that children have their very first dental visit within six months of their first tooth erupting, or no later than their first birthday.
What Happens At The First Dental Visit?
At your child’s first dental appointment, we will:
- Welcome you to our office and give you a tour so you can meet our friendly pediatric dentists and team
- Discuss your child’s diet and overall health with you
- Review the basic techniques of brushing and flossing your children’s teeth
- Answer any questions you have
- Perform a quick, gentle exam to assess what is happening with your child’s teeth
- Gently clean their teeth and mouth and provide a fluoride treatment – both the toothpaste and the fluoride come in yummy flavors!
- Take X-rays if needed
- Discuss your child’s ongoing treatment plan – this may be as simple as setting up their regular schedule of visits every six months
Remember, we are here to be your partner in caring for your child’s oral health. Feel free to call us anytime! Our pediatric dentists and team are always here to answer your questions and help you.
