Rockland Pediatric Dental and Orthodontics collaborate with several anesthesiologists to provide IV sedation for your child. This form of sedation provides medication directly to your child’s bloodstream to help him or her feel comfortable and receive the treatments he or she needs.
Before IV Sedation
Before your child’s appointment, please:
- Notify us of any changes in your child’s health – if your child is ill, we may reschedule their appointment
- Tell us about any medications your child uses, including any allergic reactions they have to drugs or medication
- Tell us about any existing medical conditions or changes to your child’s medical history
- Dress your child in comfortable, loose clothing for their appointment
- Take your child to the restroom before the start of the appointment
- Do not give your child milk or solid food after midnight the night prior to treatment
- Give your child only clear liquids in the six hours immediately before the appointment
- If your child uses an asthma inhaler, please bring it with you to the appointment
Please also remember that as your child’s legal guardian, you must be present in our office throughout their entire procedure.
After IV Sedation
Following your child’s IV sedation appointment:
- Your child will be very drowsy – please monitor them closely
- Make sure your child sleeps on the side with the chin up
- Wake your child every hour for a drink to reduce dehydration – start with small sips of clear liquids
- Ensure that your child’s first meal after treatment is light and easy to digest
- If your child vomits, help himr or her bend over and turn his or her head to the side
