You may notice that your teeth have become stained, yellowed, discolored or simply dull. Here at Rockland Pediatric Dental and Orthodontics, we provide professional whitening treatments to brighten and renew your teeth and smile!
Why Do Teeth Become Discolored?
Teeth become stained or discolored for a number of reasons, including:
- The natural aging process
- Poor dental hygiene
- Frequent consumption of foods and drinks that stain (tea, wine, coffee, soda, mustard, BBQ sauce, etc.)
- Use of tobacco products, including smoking
- Illness
- Use of certain medications
- Fluorosis (excessive fluoride consumption when young)
What Is Teeth Whitening?
Teeth whitening is a cosmetic treatment designed to break up the stains and discolorations on your teeth. It involves the use of a powerful and safe whitening gel. This gel is applied to your teeth, where it works to improve their appearance and brighten your smile. In in-office whitening, this gel is activated using a special light to ensure that you have a noticeably improved smile by the time you leave our practice. In take-home whitening treatments, the gel is placed into a tray which you can wear on your own schedule, working to lighten your teeth over a period of several weeks.
Maintaining Your Whitening Results
You can maintain the results of your teeth whitening treatment by:
- Keeping up a good oral hygiene routine – brush at least twice a day and floss daily
- Keeping your regular dental appointments with our dentist for cleanings and exams
- Avoiding the use of tobacco products
- Using a whitening toothpaste when brushing
- Rinsing your mouth and brushing after consuming foods and drinks that can stain
We also recommend that you “touch up” your smile with another whitening treatment periodically.
